Pressure is mounting on Samuel Onunga Atandi after the Alego-Usonga MP failed to attend a highly anticipated function convened by his office at Sidok Primary School in West Alego, a gathering that many believed could have turned politically explosive.

In a move that immediately fueled speculation and criticism, the MP skipped the tense meeting and instead sent his close local ally and political operative Peter K’Omala — a figure critics in the constituency increasingly describe as Atandi’s political “boogeyman” due to his aggressive grassroots mobilization style and combative defense of the legislator.

But even K’Omala’s presence failed to calm growing public frustration.

Observers had been watching the Sidok event keenly, aware that Atandi was returning to politically dangerous territory. The last time the MP addressed residents in the area, he triggered a storm after declaring that respected Siaya scholar and governance expert Dr. William Oduol Denge was not suitable for the gubernatorial position.

Atandi then appeared to elevate his own credentials, arguing that after serving two terms as MP, he deserved promotion to governor — remarks many residents interpreted as dismissive, entitled and politically arrogant.

The reaction from the crowd was swift and hostile.

Sections of residents openly booed the MP, exposing widening resistance to what critics now call his increasingly confrontational and self-centered political messaging.

Only a week later, the political fallout escalated dramatically when Atandi was physically attacked during a burial ceremony in Komenya Rabar, an incident that signaled the depth of simmering anger among sections of the electorate.

Thursday’s Sidok gathering was therefore expected to provide the MP with an opportunity to either repair relations with residents or deepen the growing political crisis around his leadership.

Instead, the event collapsed almost before it began.

School principals attending the function reportedly disclosed that the MP’s office had failed to release the much-publicized KES 5,000 capitation support promised to students under Atandi’s ambitious “free education” initiative for day secondary schools across the constituency.

The disclosure instantly deflated the meeting and triggered fresh criticism from parents, education stakeholders and residents who accused the MP of overpromising and underdelivering.

For many residents, the failure of the education pledge has now become symbolic of a broader credibility problem facing the legislator.

Political analysts say Atandi’s recent political battles have only worsened the situation.

The MP recently sparked fresh controversy after publicly taking on James Aggrey Bob Orengo over claims surrounding the perceived relocation of the Siaya campus of Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology — accusations many critics viewed as misleading and unnecessarily inflammatory.

He also became the subject of widespread ridicule after confidently declaring on live television that the Kisumu “Linda Mwananchi” rally would not take place.

Not only did the rally proceed successfully, but it also attracted massive crowds, leaving the MP politically embarrassed and exposed to fierce criticism online and within ODM political circles.

Now, with failed promises, growing public hostility and mounting political miscalculations dogging his leadership, Atandi appears to be entering one of the most turbulent phases of his political career.

And in Sidok, many residents left with one conclusion: the fireworks they expected may not have happened — but the silence from the MP spoke even louder.
