A powerful alliance of political leaders and grassroots activists on Thursday mounted a spirited legal and public defense of embattled figure Evans “Kidero Jasuba” Kawala, following what supporters have termed a politically motivated arrest.
The rescue mission, led by seasoned legal mind and Siaya Senator James Orengo alongside Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, culminated in a decisive courtroom victory after Kawala was granted bail.
Activists under the Linda Mwananchi movement declared the arrest an attempt to intimidate dissenting voices, vowing to resist what they described as creeping political repression.
“We refuse to back down,” the group said in a strongly worded statement. “Today, we stood shoulder to shoulder with Kidero. Justice must never be selective.”
The legal push, orchestrated by a team aligned to Owino, moved swiftly through the courts, securing Kawala’s release in a development that drew cheers from supporters gathered outside the courthouse.
Observers noted the visible show of solidarity from the Bunge La Wananchi movement, whose members turned up in large numbers, chanting slogans and calling for accountability within the justice system.
“Massive respect to the Bunge La Wananchi family for standing firm,” the statement added, underscoring the growing influence of citizen-led activism in Kenya’s political landscape.
The incident is likely to reignite debate over the use of state machinery in political contests, with analysts warning that such arrests risk deepening divisions and undermining public trust in institutions.
As Kawala walked free on bail, his supporters framed the moment not just as a legal victory, but as a symbolic stand against what they see as systemic targeting of outspoken individuals.
With Orengo’s legal expertise and Owino’s mobilization power on full display, Thursday’s events may signal a broader realignment of resistance politics—one where courtroom battles and street solidarity converge.
For now, Linda Mwananchi and its allies insist the fight is far from over.
“This is just the beginning,” they said. “We will continue to defend justice, no matter the cost.”
