Irene Wanjiru Mbugua, a 48-year-old Kenyan caregiver, has died after being attacked while on duty in Birmingham, United Kingdom leaving kids opharned.
The heartbreaking incident happened on Saturday, June 22, 2025, and has left both her family in Kenya and the Kenyan community in the UK in deep shock and mourning.
Irene had been working in the UK as a caregiver for two years. She was described by friends and co-workers as a hardworking, kind, and dedicated woman.
She was a single mother of four children and had travelled abroad to provide a better future for her family.
According to police reports, emergency services were called to a house on Markby Road in Birmingham at around 1:00 am.
When officers arrived, they found Irene’s body. A post-mortem examination later showed she died from severe injuries to her head and face.
David Walsh, a 34-year-old man who was being cared for at the house, was arrested at the scene.
He has been charged with Irene’s murder. Police also confirmed that Walsh attacked several police officers during his arrest.
He was taken to hospital for treatment before being placed in custody. He later appeared in court and is now being held as investigations continue.
Authorities have said they are not looking for any other suspects in connection with Irene’s death.
The case has caused deep concern among caregivers in the UK, especially those working in private homes.
Many have expressed fear over their safety at work.
Most caregivers, especially those from Africa, work alone and face many risks, including physical harm, emotional stress, and difficult working conditions.
Fellow Nurses Africa, an organization that supports African healthcare workers, has called for better safety and protection for caregivers.
They are also asking the public and the caregiving community to support Irene’s children during this painful time.
Health and safety experts in the UK say that all employers must assess the risks involved in caregiving jobs.
