Harambee Stars sealed top spot in Group A of the African Nations Championship (CHAN) after edging out Zambia 1-0 in a tense clash at Kasarani Stadium on Sunday, August 17.
Tusker striker Ryan Ogam emerged the match-winner, netting the decisive strike in the 75th minute to hand Kenya all three points and ensure they progressed to the quarter-finals with ten points—one clear of Morocco. The result set up a quarter-final showdown against Madagascar on Friday, August 22.
From the onset, Kenya pressed aggressively, determined to close the group stage on a high. Zambia, already eliminated, fought to salvage pride and nearly shocked the hosts early when Kelvin Mubanga pounced on a defensive lapse, only for Michael Kibwage to clear off the line.
Kenya’s best first-half chances fell to Ogam and Austin Odhiambo, but Zambian goalkeeper Kalumba stood tall, frustrating the Stars as the match went into halftime goalless.
The breakthrough finally arrived when Clifford Muchiri sliced through the Zambian defence before setting up Ogam, who coolly slotted the ball past Kalumba to spark wild celebrations inside Kasarani.
Zambia pushed for an equaliser, Mubanga forcing a superb late save from Farouk Shikalo, but the Kenyan defence held firm to claim a famous victory.
Ruto’s Multi-Million Promise
Ahead of the match, President William Ruto pledged Ksh2.5 million to each player for beating Zambia and an additional Ksh1 million plus a two-bedroom house if the Stars reach the semi-finals.
“We’ve agreed on rewards: A win against Zambia will earn each player Ksh2.5 million. If they triumph in the quarter-finals, each will receive Ksh1 million and a house in a location of their choice,” Ruto declared after hosting the team at State House last week.
The Head of State hailed the Harambee Stars for uniting Kenyans across political and social divides, urging citizens to rally behind the national team.
“Unity has always propelled us forward. The Harambee Stars are proof of what belief and teamwork can achieve. This is our moment, and I am confident the trophy is within reach,” he said.
With momentum on their side and the nation’s backing, Kenya now turns its focus to the high-stakes quarter-final clash against Madagascar.
