Businessman Martine Otieno Juma—popularly known as Mijesh—joined family, friends, and leaders in Gem Sirembe on Saturday to bid farewell to his father-in-law, the late Eng. Godfrey Muga.
The funeral ceremony drew dignitaries including Siaya Governor James Orengo, County Assembly Speaker George Okode, County Secretary Joseph Ogutu, Gem MP Elisha Odhiambo, several MCAs, and senior county officials. Their presence underscored the deep respect for Eng. Muga, remembered as a devoted family man, community pillar, and professional who touched many lives with his generosity, wisdom, and service.

Mourners spoke of the close relationship between Eng. Muga and his son-in-law. Beyond being bound by marriage, the two had developed a confidante bond—one built on trust, mutual admiration, and shared values. Many recalled how Eng. Muga became a mentor and sounding board for Mijesh, offering guidance as he expanded his business footprint and deepened his community engagements. “He was not just a father-in-law,” a family friend remarked, “he was a true counselor and companion in life’s journey.”
Governor James Orengo paid glowing tribute to the late engineer, describing him as a man who lived not for himself but for others. “Eng. Muga leaves behind a legacy of service and humility. He was a man who believed in community and in nurturing those around him, and that is why we celebrate his life today,” Orengo said.

Speaker George Okode echoed the governor’s sentiments, praising Muga as a mentor whose lessons live on in those he guided. “He was the kind of man whose wisdom never expired. He gave without asking, and advised without seeking recognition,” Okode remarked.
Gem MP Elisha Odhiambo also comforted the family, singling out Mijesh for praise. “In Mijesh we see the values that Eng. Muga stood for—humility, generosity, and dedication to community. Today we grieve, but we also honor the bond they shared,” the legislator said.
For Mijesh, fanatically known as a darling of social media operatives locally identified as sangwenyas, the loss was deeply personal. Known for his humility and ability to blend easily with people across all walks of life, the businessman stood quietly through the proceedings, a reflection of the respect he carried for the man who had been both family and confidante.
Beyond his personal grief, the gathering inevitably brought attention to Mijesh’s imprint on Siaya and the greater Lake Region. Through Mijesh Construction Company, headquartered in Kisumu, he has delivered projects that have changed the face of the county. His firm was instrumental in the rehabilitation of the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Stadium, now a regional sporting hub, and has overseen the construction of high-quality bitumen and feeder roads that link rural and urban communities.
Speakers noted that beyond infrastructure, Mijesh’s quiet generosity has touched countless lives. Politicians and ordinary residents alike have benefitted from his support—be it financial aid, community investments, or mentorship.
Even as whispers about possible political ambitions swirl, Mijesh has remained non-committal, preferring to serve quietly through his work and philanthropy. His humility, many said, is what makes him widely accepted and likable across social classes.
But in Gem Sirembe on Saturday, the focus was not on politics or business. It was on family, grief, and remembrance. As mourners celebrated Eng. Muga’s legacy, they also stood with Mijesh in his moment of loss. And in the quiet dignity with which he carried himself, the businessman reminded all present that true influence lies not in declarations, but in humility, service, and respect for those who came before.
