The National Police Service (NPS) has confirmed that arrangements are underway to repatriate the body of a Kenyan police officer killed in a tragic road accident in Haiti on Sunday, August 31.
NPS Spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga said on Monday that the officer’s family has been notified and assured of the government’s full support.
“The MSS, in collaboration with the Haitian National Police (HNP), is making arrangements to repatriate the officer’s body to Kenya and is ensuring the injured personnel continue to receive the best possible medical care,” said Muchiri.
The accident occurred at 5:00 p.m. along the Kenscoff–Pétion-Ville Road in the Pèlerin 9 area during a recovery operation. Two MaxxPro armored vehicles were involved, one towing the other, when a mechanical failure led to the crash.
The incident claimed the lives of the Kenyan officer and two Haitian civilians. Eight other Multinational Security Support Mission (MSS) officers sustained injuries, with three listed in critical condition and requiring evacuation to the Dominican Republic for specialized treatment.
Muchiri conveyed the NPS’s condolences: “We extend our deepest and most heartfelt sympathies to the family, friends, and colleagues of the fallen officer and assure them of our unwavering support during this time of profound sorrow.”
The U.S. Embassy in Haiti also expressed its condolences, describing the loss as “deeply saddening” and wishing the injured a speedy recovery.
The Kenya-led MSS deployment in Haiti brings together officers from six nations — Kenya, Jamaica, Bahamas, Guyana, Barbados, and Guatemala — tasked with stabilizing the Caribbean nation amid deepening insecurity.
