Senye Beach and the ancient Thimlich Ohinga came alive in a spectacular fusion of culture, politics and promise as President William Ruto joined Governor James Orengo and regional Luo leaders at a grand cultural extravaganza that underscored unity, heritage and development in Nyanza.
The high-profile event drew governors and leaders from across Luo-speaking counties, transforming the historic lakeside venue into a living museum of tradition and talent. From the rhythmic intensity of Ajua board games to gripping traditional wrestling, adrenaline-charged boat racing, the symbolic Diedo Pi rites, and a vibrant food fair (Chiemb Onagi), the celebration showcased the richness of Luo heritage in full colour.
Cultural icons Joyce Awandu and Tero Buru thrilled crowds with soul-stirring performances, while elders conducted a symbolic coronation ceremony, reinforcing the continuity of tradition. A commemorative tree planting marked the occasion—an enduring symbol of remembrance for historical Luo artefacts and the spirit of annual cultural interaction.
In a standout moment, President Ruto was presented with the Thimlich Ohinga Giraffe Sanctuary by Ambassador Esther Akothe, alongside representatives from KWS and NMK, highlighting the growing convergence of culture, conservation and tourism.

Speaking during the reception, Siaya Governor James Orengo, who led leaders in welcoming the President, delivered a passionate address urging the community to guard its beliefs, values, ideological foundations and political independence. He called on the Luo nation to remain anchored in the legacy of the community’s doyen, Raila Odinga, and to protect the hard-won gains that have shaped its cultural and political trajectory.
Governor Orengo further rallied Luo communities in Kenya and the diaspora—spanning South Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda and the DRC—to renew cohesion inspired by the forefathers led by Jaramogi Oginga Odinga and other crowned Luo elders.
Echoing these sentiments, ODM Party leader Dr. Oburu Oginga called for closer political coordination and dynamic interventions to unlock socio-economic prosperity. He emphasized investment in youth talents, sports development, and the upgrade of facilities to position the region as a hub of opportunity.
President Ruto, in his address, pledged sustained government support for the preservation and development of Luo cultural artefacts, including the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Mausoleum at Kango ka Jaramogi, the enhancement of Got Ramogi facilities, and improved infrastructure linking cultural sites across Nyanza.
“Improving fish landing sites is a priority,” President Ruto said, acknowledging the region’s potential and the need to reverse years of lag attributed to political isolation. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to inclusive development, vowing to work with regional leaders to uplift rural communities and ensure Migori and the wider Nyanza region benefit from national growth.
The Senye–Thimlich gathering marked more than a celebration—it signaled a renewed chapter of cooperation, cultural pride and development promises, anchored in history and aimed squarely at the future.
