Detectives in Nairobi have smashed what is believed to be a key link in a counterfeit currency network after seizing a large consignment of fake US dollars and arresting a prime suspect in the Lucky Summer area.
Acting on solid intelligence, officers from Lucky Summer Police Station zeroed in on a white Toyota Prado, registration number KDQ 401U, suspected to be transporting counterfeit foreign currency. The vehicle was intercepted during a targeted operation, leading to the arrest of the driver, 38-year-old Felix Nyegesa.
A thorough search of the SUV immediately raised suspicion. Officers discovered a locked metallic blue box concealed in the boot. Nyegesa reportedly declined to open the box, prompting detectives to escort him and the vehicle to the police station for further investigation.
The contents of the box confirmed investigators’ fears. Inside were 68 bundles of counterfeit US dollars, each bundle containing 100 fake $100 notes, pointing to a well-organised and potentially high-value counterfeiting operation. Also recovered were cartons, newspapers, cotton wool, sand and stones—materials believed to have been used to disguise or package the fake currency.

Nyegesa is currently being held in police custody as detectives intensify investigations to establish the full scope of the counterfeit syndicate, including possible accomplices and distribution channels within and beyond Nairobi. He is expected to be arraigned in court upon completion of processing.
Police have reiterated their commitment to dismantling economic crimes that threaten financial stability and public trust, urging members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity.
