A Guardian Angel Luxury Coaches bus carrying students was involved in a serious road accident this morning, Tuesday, January 6, 2026, at the notorious Kimende escarpment along the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway. In a remarkable stroke of fortune, all students and other passengers emerged unharmed, according to police and eyewitness accounts.
The incident happened at around 9:00 a.m. as schools reopened across the country and many families travelled upcountry or returned students to boarding schools. The bus, travelling from Nairobi towards Nakuru, veered off the steep, winding section of the highway and rolled into a shallow ravine.
Emergency teams from Maai Mahiu Police Station, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), and local rescue services responded swiftly. All occupants were evacuated safely, with no reports of injuries among the students—who were mostly in school uniforms—or other passengers.
“We thank God that everyone is safe,” a police officer at the scene told reporters. “The students were shaken but walked away without a scratch. This could have been far worse.”
Eyewitnesses described chaotic but ultimately relieved scenes as students helped one another out of the wreckage and waited for alternative transport arranged by the bus company. Parents of some of the students rushed to the scene after receiving frantic calls, only to find their children safe and sound.
Guardian Angel Luxury Coaches released a statement expressing profound relief: “We are deeply thankful that no one was injured in this incident. The safety of our passengers remains our top priority, and we are fully cooperating with authorities in the ongoing investigation.”
The accident caused major traffic disruptions on one of Kenya’s busiest highways, with queues stretching several kilometres in both directions until the wreckage was cleared by early afternoon.
Road safety advocates have once again highlighted the Kimende escarpment as a deadly black spot, calling for immediate measures such as improved barriers, stricter speed controls, and mandatory brake checks for descending vehicles.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the crash, with early indications pointing to possible mechanical issues. No further details have been released pending the official report.
