Police in Siaya County have seized a massive 990 litres of suspected chang’aa in a dramatic roadside operation that has dealt a major blow to the illicit alcohol trade in the region.
Officers from Kogelo Police Station made the recovery on Tuesday in Uuna area along the Ng’iya–Ndori Road, within South East Alego Location, following a road traffic accident involving a motor vehicle and a motorcycle. The incident took a suspicious turn when the driver of the vehicle abandoned the scene and fled, raising alarm among first responders.
Upon securing the area, police discovered 18 sacks packed with sachets of the illicit brew. Five sacks were found inside the vehicle, while thirteen more had been cleverly concealed nearby, suggesting an organized attempt to evade law enforcement.
The seized consignment was immediately taken into police custody as exhibits, with officers terming the haul one of the largest single recoveries of illicit alcohol in the area in recent months.
Investigations are underway to identify and apprehend the suspects behind the operation, as police intensify efforts to dismantle networks involved in the production, transportation, and distribution of illegal brews.
The National Police Service (NPS) reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining and scaling up crackdowns on illicit alcohol, noting that such substances pose a serious threat to public health, road safety, and community wellbeing.
Residents have been urged to remain vigilant and continue sharing intelligence with security agencies as the fight against illicit brews gathers momentum across Siaya County.
