A major breakthrough has been recorded in the fight against highway crime after detectives from Rabai Sub-County arrested three suspected members of a notorious robbery gang that has been terrorising truck drivers along the busy Mombasa–Nairobi highway.
Acting on a timely tip-off from vigilant members of the public, detectives launched a targeted operation in the Mabirikani area, leading to the dramatic arrest of Juma Ali, Hamisi Juma, and Benedict Chirodo. The trio is believed to be part of a larger, well-organised criminal network responsible for a string of highway robberies near the Bonje area of Mazeras Township, a known hotspot for ambushes on long-haul truckers.
During the operation, officers recovered a cache of suspicious items linking the suspects to multiple criminal activities. The haul included foreign currency from several countries, two pairs of military boots, 14 rolls of bhang, 32 pieces of mug glass, mobile phone chargers, two bales of carrier bags, and an HCL computer keyboard. Investigators say the items correspond to several robbery and theft cases already reported at Mazeras Police Station.
Police believe the gang targeted truck drivers using intimidation and stealth, exploiting poorly lit sections of the highway to stage their attacks before melting back into nearby settlements.
The suspects are currently in police custody undergoing processing ahead of their arraignment in court. All recovered items have been secured as exhibits as investigations continue, with detectives pursuing leads to flush out other members of the criminal syndicate.
Authorities have once again hailed public cooperation as a critical weapon in dismantling organized crime and urged citizens to remain vigilant.
