Murang’a Pastor Collapses 20 Minutes Short of 80-Hour Tree-Hug Record, Suffers Acute Kidney Injury

Jimmy Irungu’s bold cancer awareness stunt ends in hospital drama as doctors reveal organ strain from extreme exhaustion

A 30-year-old Murang’a pastor, Jimmy Irungu, was rushed to hospital on Wednesday morning after collapsing just 20 minutes before completing an ambitious 80-hour tree-hugging challenge meant to spotlight cancer suffering in the county.

Irungu began the feat on Sunday at 9:27 p.m., aiming to finish at 5:57 a.m. on January 8. Supporters cheered as the clock ticked down, but with victory in sight, he fainted from exhaustion. An on-site ambulance immediately transported him to Murang’a County Referral Hospital.

Consultant physician and nephrologist Dr James Kahura confirmed the pastor arrived with early signs of multiple organ failure.

“He had acute kidney injury, severe muscle fatigue, elevated muscle enzymes, and his brain function was starting to be affected,” Dr Kahura said. “The extreme exhaustion and dehydration triggered serious complications.”

Medics resuscitated Irungu, administered fluids to correct electrolyte imbalances, and stabilised his blood pressure and sugar levels. The doctor said the patient is now producing adequate urine and is clinically stable, though he will remain under observation for at least another 24 hours.

“This kind of prolonged physical strain without proper sleep or hydration can be life-threatening,” Dr Kahura warned. He advised anyone planning similar challenges to undergo medical screening first and ensure qualified health personnel are present throughout.

He referenced last year’s tree-hugging attempt by Truphena Muthoni, noting that with proper preparation such stunts can be completed safely.

Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata visited Irungu in hospital on Tuesday alongside other county leaders. The governor praised the pastor’s cause while stressing that resident safety comes first.

“Cancer remains a huge challenge for many families here,” Kang’ata said. “We have rolled out telemedicine services so patients can consult specialists from local dispensaries, but right now our priority is Pastor Irungu’s full recovery.”

Irungu’s challenge had drawn widespread attention online and locally as a creative way to push for better cancer support services in Murang’a County.

Doctors say he is responding well to treatment and is expected to make a full recovery.
