Kenya is mourning the sudden death of former Kilgoris Member of Parliament Gideon Konchellah, a veteran politician and ex-Cabinet Minister, who passed away following a cardiac arrest while undergoing treatment in Nairobi.

Konchellah died in the early hours of Saturday, June 13, at Nairobi Hospital, bringing to a close a long and distinguished career in public service that spanned the military and political arenas.

According to Basic Education Principal Secretary John Ololtuaa, the former lawmaker had been battling illness since November 2025. His condition worsened after he contracted an infection, leading to his admission on May 30, 2026.

“On June 12, he suffered a cardiac arrest and passed away at 4am,” Ololtuaa confirmed during a press briefing.

His body has since been moved to Lee Funeral Home as the family begins funeral arrangements.

Konchellah served as the Kilgoris MP for two terms between 2003 and 2022, earning a reputation as a firm and influential leader in Narok County politics. He later vied unsuccessfully for the Narok senatorial seat.

During the late President Mwai Kibaki’s administration, Konchellah held a key Cabinet portfolio as Minister for Immigration and Registration of Persons. He is credited with spearheading reforms, including the enactment of the Refugee Act, which significantly reshaped Kenya’s refugee management framework.

Before entering politics, Konchellah had an illustrious military career spanning over three decades. He served in various capacities within the Kenya Defence Forces, including as a commander in the Kenya Army Ordnance Corps at Kahawa Barracks and later as a logistics officer in the Department of Defence.

Leaders across the political divide have expressed their condolences following his passing.

President William Ruto and Narok Governor Patrick Ntutu are among those who have reached out to the bereaved family.

Narok Senator Ledama Olekina described the loss as devastating, noting a troubling trend of losing prominent leaders in the region.

“The steady stream of sad news is devastating and speaks to our times. We are all living on borrowed time. Rest well, leader. You served the community well,” Olekina said.

Konchellah’s death marks the end of an era for Narok County, where he was regarded as a towering figure in both governance and community leadership.

As Kenya reflects on his legacy, he will be remembered as a disciplined military officer, a reform-driven Cabinet Minister, and a committed representative who left a lasting imprint on public service.

Further details on funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in the coming days.
