A quiet rural compound turned into a scene of heartbreak on Friday, December 2, when 51-year-old Akumu Ogonda was discovered collapsed and comatose in his home. Just minutes earlier, he had made a desperate phone call to former schoolteacher and his boss, Sylvester Olwalo, complaining of excruciating stomach cramps.
Olwalo rushed to the scene in under five minutes, only to find Ogonda slumped lifelessly in a chair. Despite an immediate rush to Uradi Catholic Mission Hospital, the father of four was pronounced dead on arrival.
Ogonda lived alone in his compound, estranged from his wife, raising his children single-handedly in West Alego location.
Area Assistant Chief Owino Obota confirmed the incident, urging residents to avoid wild speculation about possible poisoning. “We are awaiting the postmortem results from doctors before drawing any conclusions,” Obota said, calling for patience amid growing village rumors.
The sudden nature of the death – triggered by severe abdominal pain and rapid deterioration – has left locals reeling, with many questioning if foul play was involved.
Authorities have launched investigations as the community mourns yet another unexplained loss in Siaya County.
Siaya County has seen several suspicious deaths in recent years, often involving sudden illness, stomach issues, or family disputes. Notable cases include:
December 2025 (Gem Wagai): A 74-year-old man, Ernest Ojigo Olum, and his 5-year-old son died after eating a meal of ugali and kunde (cowpea leaves). Three family members were hospitalized with severe symptoms in a suspected food poisoning case possibly linked to a land feud.
February 2025 (Bondo): Two family members died and three others fell critically ill from suspected food poisoning, with victims reporting intense vomiting and abdominal distress.
July 2025 (Yala): A Ugandan woman died suddenly after complaining of severe stomach pain, with police investigating possible food poisoning.
April 2025 (Ugunja/Ugenya): Nine family members (a couple and their seven children) were burned to death in a suspected arson attack over a land dispute – highlighting deadly family conflicts in the region.
November 2024: A man, his wife, and son died mysteriously within days of each other, sparking unanswered questions in the community.
2016 (Alego Usonga): Four siblings aged 8-15 died after consuming cassava believed to be poisonous, in a tragic food-related incident close to West Alego.
These cases underscore a pattern of unexplained deaths, often tied to suspected contamination or disputes, as authorities continue probing Ogonda’s case.
