Another ugly incident occurred at PCEA church in Mwiki area of Nairobi on Sunday 6, April as hired goons attacked and interrupted a church service attended by among other people, former vice president, Rigathi Gachagua.
The violent disturbance at the Presbyterian Church of East Africa (PCEA) Mwiki in Kasarani, Nairobi County, saw one of the former vice president handlers fire in the air to scare away the goons and secure passage before things escalated to unmanageable proportions.
This is the latest in a series of attacks directed at Rigathi Gachagua.
The group of hired youths, some armed with batons and others throwing stones and upsetting chairs, forced their way into the church compound, causing panic among the congregation.
Gachagua’s security team responded by firing gunshots into the air to disperse the attackers and restore order.
Following the incident, Gachagua has expressed bewilderment and concern, wondering if intimidation of this kind is also a way of resolving differences by some people.
” don’t understand why goons were sent to desecrate a church service only to attack Gachagua”, the former VP said.
In the same breath he accused President William Samoei Ruto and Nairobi Governor Johnson Arthur Sakaja for being behind the attack. He linked the series of attacks to his ongoing political conflict with President Ruto.
“You profess to be a Christian but you sent me goons in Limuru last week, you sent goons to Nyeri, and now you’ve sent them to church,” said Gachagua in a statement issued shortly after the attack.
He nonetheless reiterated his earlier stand that such incidences are part of a pattern of political intimidation, but will fall short of their intended purpose.
The latest attack has left several people injured, sparking outrage among Kenyans on social media, with many condemning the violation of a place of worship.
Political analysts and public figures have called for a thorough investigation into the incident, emphasizing the importance of upholding the sanctity of religious institutions and ensuring the safety of political figures.
These occurrences have reignited concerns about the rising political intolerance in the country and the increasing use of violence to settle political scores. The incident has intensified the political tension between Gachagua and Ruto’s supporters, with both sides blaming each other for the attacks.
