A 45-year-old man suspected to be suffering from mental derangement has killed his 85-year-old grandmother by gruesomely hitting her on the neck with an axe.
George Opondo of Diere village, Jera sub-Location in Ugenya whom neighbors said has been acting erratic lately, killed his grandmother then calmly headed to Bar-Ober Police Post to hand himself in.
North Ugenya Assistant Chief John Okelo Mboto said Opondo has been staying alone with the elderly woman after his wife and children left him.
“He now blames the old woman to be a witch and the source of the problems facing the family,” said the administrator.
Opondo led officers to the scene where the body of Jennifer Aduor Ooko was retrieved from a locked house in the compound.
The murder weapon, an axe coated with blood and a shovel (spade) was recovered from the scene.
The deceased who apparently died from heavy loss of blood was sprawled out on the floor with a deep cut in the neck and another on the left side of the face.
Opondo was escorted under heavy security to Ukwala Police Station where he is being processed in readiness for arraignment in court.
The body was moved to Ukwala sub-County Hospital mortuary.
