Counties to Work with State to Drive Successful Affordable Housing Agenda — Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o

Kisumu Governor Prof. Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o has called for deeper collaboration between national and county governments in the implementation of Kenya’s Affordable Housing agenda, emphasizing the need for a unified and strategic vision.

Speaking at the 4th Kenya Affordable Housing Conference (KAHC) held at the Grand Royal Swiss Hotel in Kisumu, Governor Nyong’o stressed that both levels of government must operate as co-owners, not competitors, in delivering affordable, inclusive, and sustainable housing to Kenyans.

“The national and county governments must act not as competing jurisdictions but as co-owners of a shared housing vision—jointly responsible for planning, resourcing, implementing, and monitoring progress,” the Governor stated.

The high-level conference attracted guests from across Kenya and delegations from India, Pakistan, and Malaysia. Among the dignitaries present was Hon. Alice Wahome, Cabinet Secretary for Lands, Public Works, Housing and Urban Development, alongside representatives from the Kenya Mortgage Refinance Company (KMRC), housing developers, financiers, and sector stakeholders.

Nyong’o underscored Kisumu County’s active role in supporting the Affordable Housing agenda by embedding it in its Urban Development Strategy, offering titled land, digitizing approval processes, and investing in essential infrastructure to encourage private sector involvement.

He highlighted ongoing housing projects including:

Makasembo, in partnership with LAPFUND, with over 1,200 housing units,

Kanyakwar, developed jointly with the National Housing Corporation (2,600 units),

Kirembe, which is in the pipeline.

“These initiatives are about more than just houses—they’re about restoring dignity, expanding homeownership, and building inclusive communities,” he said.

The Governor concluded by affirming that county governments are not just fallback implementers but equal constitutional partners in delivering the affordable housing promise.
