Siaya County is reeling from a series of destructive downpours and violent winds that have swept through parts of the region, leaving residents counting losses and bracing for potential flooding as Rivers Yala and Nzoia continue to rise alarmingly.
Authorities warn that the two major rivers, already swollen from continuous rainfall, are threatening to burst their banks, posing a looming risk of flooding in low-lying areas. The ongoing storms have destroyed homes, flattened crops, and battered public infrastructure, with the newly constructed market in Malunga, West Gem Ward among the most severely affected.

According to a statement issued by Siaya County Woman Representative Dr. Christine Ombaka, the strong winds ripped through the market structure, causing significant damage to the roof while also affecting nearby homes. Her office has reported the incident to the Ministry of Works and is awaiting formal assessment to facilitate emergency repairs and mobilise funds for possible reconstruction.
Dr. Ombaka commiserated with affected residents, urging them to remain calm as she follows up the matter with the relevant authorities. She expressed appreciation for the patience shown by the community and assured constituents that the restoration of damaged facilities will be treated with urgency.
“As these rains continue, our priority is the safety and well-being of our people. We are working diligently to ensure that damaged infrastructure, including the Malunga market, is restored as soon as possible,” her statement reads.
The Kenya Meteorological Department has warned that the heavy rains will persist over the coming days, signalling more difficult times ahead for residents. Fortunately, despite the destruction, Siaya County has reported no loss of life in the ongoing deluge.
Dr. Ombaka however expressed disappointment over individuals exploiting the disaster for political gain, terming it “extreme sadism” to attempt to weaponise a natural tragedy. She accused unnamed actors of sponsoring doctored opinion polls and engaging in premature political campaigns driven by fear of her recently declared interest in the Gem Constituency Parliamentary seat in the 2027 elections.
“It is sad that instead of standing with our people during this tragedy, some individuals have resorted to playing politics. At this moment, leaders should offer credible service to the electorate, not utterances that aim at stirring divisive repercussions,” she stated firmly, adding that even if it came down to politics, she considers only the incumbent as a legitimate competitor.
She urged political players to focus on unity and service delivery rather than unfounded, divisive rhetoric, calling for level-headedness during this critical time.
Relief efforts, damage assessments and safety advisories are ongoing, with residents encouraged to pay attention to official updates as the rains continue to pound the county.
