The Siaya-Bondo Water and Sanitation Company (SIBOWASCO) has intensified efforts to restore sanitation efficiency in Bondo Municipality, successfully reopening multiple clogged sewer lines and eliminating critical overflow points in a major public health intervention.

The SIBOWASCO Sewer Maintenance Team, currently camped in Bondo town, has deployed a combination of mechanical and manual clearance techniques to tackle persistent blockages. The ongoing operation has significantly improved wastewater flow, reducing incidences of sewer surcharging and mitigating health risks associated with raw sewage exposure.

According to the utility, the targeted unblocking of problematic manholes—long identified as nuisance hotspots—has been executed with precision, strict adherence to safety standards, and within scheduled timelines. The intervention is also expected to enhance downstream treatment performance at the Barkowino Waste Stabilisation Ponds, a key facility in the region’s sanitation system.

However, a comprehensive assessment of the Bondo sewer network reveals deep-rooted infrastructure challenges that threaten long-term sustainability.

Alarming System Deficits

SIBOWASCO reports that 69 manholes remain blocked, while 12 are structurally compromised. Even more concerning is the loss of approximately 300 manhole covers, exposing residents and workers to safety hazards while disrupting hydraulic efficiency across the system.

Key Challenges Undermining Progress

The utility has identified several systemic obstacles:

– Vandalism: Rampant theft of manhole covers continues to undermine infrastructure integrity and poses serious safety risks.
– Solid Waste and Storm Water Ingress: Illegal dumping and uncontrolled runoff are accelerating sewer blockages and overwhelming system capacity.
– Outdated Design Capacity: The existing trunk sewer system, designed before the implementation of the Bondo Physical and Land Use Plan, is now under strain due to increased urban demand.

Call for Multi-Sector Action

SIBOWASCO has called for a coordinated response to safeguard gains made so far. The company is urging Bondo Municipality to strengthen enforcement against vandalism, improve solid waste management systems, and implement effective storm water control measures.

At the same time, technical teams are expected to pursue urgent rehabilitation works and explore capacity upgrades to align the sewer infrastructure with current and projected urban growth.

The ongoing cleanup marks a critical step toward restoring sanitation dignity in Bondo—but stakeholders warn that without sustained investment and community cooperation, the gains could be short-lived.
