Popular comedian and activist Eric Omondi will spend the weekend in police custody following his dramatic arrest at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on Friday afternoon, setting the stage for a high-stakes court showdown on Monday.
Omondi was apprehended at approximately 12:15 PM by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) shortly after arriving at the airport. Authorities have yet to publicly disclose the specific charges against him, but his legal team and allies have dismissed the accusations as baseless and politically motivated.
Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino, who was present at the Nairobi Area Regional Police Headquarters, strongly condemned the arrest, terming the charges “frivolous, fickle, limping and vexatious.”
“We are with Eric Omondi at Nairobi Area Regional Police Headquarters. Eric was arrested today at JKIA at 12:15 PM. The charges pressed against him are frivolous, fickle, limping and vexatious. The DCI officers have refused to admit him to bail. Let’s meet in Court on Monday and come prepared,” Owino said in a statement shared on social media.
In a move that has raised eyebrows among legal observers, police reportedly declined to release Omondi on bail, effectively ensuring he remains in custody throughout the weekend. Under Kenyan law, suspects are generally entitled to police bail for minor offences unless compelling reasons are presented.
Legal experts argue that denying bail without clear justification could point to either the seriousness of the alleged offence or procedural irregularities that may be challenged in court.
Omondi, known for blending comedy with activism, has in recent years emerged as a vocal critic of government policies, frequently organizing demonstrations and using his platform to highlight issues such as the cost of living and youth unemployment.
His arrest adds to a growing list of high-profile detentions involving activists and public figures, raising fresh concerns about freedom of expression and the policing of dissent in Kenya.
All eyes are now on Monday, when Omondi is expected to be arraigned in court. His legal team is likely to push for immediate release and challenge both the legality of his arrest and the denial of bail.
Supporters have already begun mobilizing online, calling for a strong show of solidarity during the court appearance.
As the situation unfolds, the case is poised to test not only the strength of the charges against Omondi but also broader questions about civil liberties, due process, and the limits of state power in Kenya’s evolving democratic landscape.
