Usonga Residents Turn Out in Droves for Free ID Registration Drive Ahead of 2027 Polls

Hundreds of residents from Usonga Ward on Tuesday turned up en masse at Sumba Chief’s Camp for the ongoing free national identity card registration exercise, signaling strong civic awareness and growing enthusiasm ahead of the 2027 General Elections.

The exercise, spearheaded by the Ministry of Interior and National Administration under the leadership of Principal Secretary Raymond Omolo, targets youth who have attained the age of 18, as well as citizens who lost or damaged their identity cards. The initiative is aimed at ensuring that all eligible Kenyans are properly documented and able to exercise their constitutional right to vote.

Local administrators reported a smooth and orderly process at Sumba Chief’s Camp, with long queues forming as early as dawn. Many first-time applicants described the exercise as timely, noting that lack of identification documents has previously locked them out of employment, government services, and electoral participation.

“This is a major boost for our youth. Without an ID, you are invisible in many aspects of life. We commend the government for bringing services closer to the people,” said one local elder.

The registration drive continues today, Wednesday, January 14, 2026, at Lunyu Library, also within Usonga Ward, as Interior Ministry officials intensify efforts to reach every eligible resident across the constituency.

Authorities have urged residents to carry the required supporting documents and to take advantage of the free service while it is available in their respective wards.

The mass registration drive forms part of a broader government strategy to enhance national registration, promote youth inclusion, and strengthen democratic participation ahead of the 2027 polls. Officials from the Ministry of Interior have reiterated that no eligible Kenyan should be left undocumented due to distance, cost, or bureaucratic hurdles.

Residents are encouraged to monitor announcements from local administrators and turn up on their designated dates to avoid last-minute congestion.

As the exercise rolls on across Alego-Usonga, early indications suggest a high uptake, reflecting growing public trust in devolved service delivery and renewed interest in shaping Kenya’s political future through the ballot.
