The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has summoned Nyaribari Chache MP Zaheer Jhanda as detectives widen a sweeping probe into violent chaos that rocked Kisii County, even as police confirmed the arrest of four more suspects linked to the incident.

The latest arrests bring the total number of individuals in custody to seven following the dramatic Friday, July 3 attack along the busy Kisii–Keroka Road in Keumbu, where a political convoy was ambushed by stone-throwing assailants in scenes that sparked national outrage.

According to the National Police Service (NPS), the additional suspects were apprehended in a coordinated security operation led by officers from Keumbu Police Station alongside DCI detectives based in Kisii Central.

In a significant escalation of the investigation, MP Jhanda has been directed to present himself before the Kisii County DCI offices to record a statement as authorities seek to establish the full circumstances surrounding the violence.

The attack, widely circulated in viral videos, showed a convoy linked to the Linda Mwananchi political faction being pelted with stones, disrupting transport and raising fresh concerns over rising political intolerance in the country.

Police say they are actively analysing video footage and pursuing fresh leads to identify all those involved, warning that more arrests could follow as the net tightens.

“The National Police Service strongly condemns the events depicted. Political intolerance, in whatever form, is unacceptable and will be rigorously pursued through the criminal justice system,” the NPS said in a statement.

Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has also ordered the Internal Affairs Unit (IAU) to conduct an independent review of the incident, including probing any possible lapses by security officers deployed in the area.

The unfolding Kisii chaos has once again thrust Kenya’s volatile political environment into the spotlight, with authorities vowing decisive action against perpetrators regardless of status or affiliation.

As investigations intensify, the spotlight now shifts to the summoned legislator and whether the probe will expose a broader network behind the orchestrated violence.
