The High Court in Nairobi on Wednesday revoked bail for businessman Philip Aroko following the prosecution’s proof that given his wealth and connections the businessman could interfere in ongoing investigations.
Phillip Aroko is a key suspect in the 30th April cold-blood murder of Kasipul legislator Charles Ong’ondo Were.
Lady Justice Kavenza ruled that Aroko should be detained in custody until May 26, 2025, overriding a previous bail decision by the Chief Magistrate based at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) court.
The ruling cited fear of witness tampering and interference with sensitive investigations.
The prosecution argued convincingly that the suspect, with his wealth, political connections, and access to shadowy networks, poses a real threat to the integrity of the probe.
Justice Kavenza concurred, acknowledging that a determination in the be treated as “urgent and complex.”
Phillip Aroko unsuccessfully vied for the Kasipul parliamentary seat against the late Charles Ong’ondo Were.
The businessman is also tied up to the shadowy Nairobi wash-wash gangs known for fleecing foreigners of millions in fake gold trade.
Speculation is rife that political rivalry could have fuelled animosity between Aroko and the late Ong’ondo Were.
Police continue to piece together the motive behind the murder with several suspects in custody. The Homabay County political scenario is becoming increasingly volatile with Deputy Governor Oyugi Magwanga falling victim to another assassination attempt in less than a month following the Ong’ondo attack.
Homabay Governor Gladys Nyasuna Wanga has strongly condemned the acts of violence and promised to work with investigative agencies to bring the perpetrators to book.
