Ex-Attorney General and former CS Justin Muturi has said the Cabinet is operating in fear as a photo of the Attorney General Dorcas Oduor kowtowing to the president emerged on social media.
The image which initially struck observers as generated by artificial intelligence has now been confirmed as genuine and it shows the Attorney General almost going down on her knees in veneration to President Dr William Samoei Ruto.
The setting of the function is most likely in the president’s office at State House. A reverse search conclusively established that the photo was taken on August 20, 2024, during Dorcas Oduor’s swearing-in ceremony at State House, Nairobi.
President Ruto nominated Oduor as the Attorney General on July 30, 2024, and she was unanimously approved by the National Assembly.
Oduor, who is the first female Attorney General in Kenyan history, previously served as the Secretary of Public Prosecution in the Office of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions.
“As a former Attorney General, I can confidently say: I would never have done this,” Justin Muturi reacted, adding “I cannot, and will not, worship any human being. This image of AG Dorcas Oduor nearly kneeling before the President is disturbing. It confirms what I once said, the Cabinet operates under fear.”
A legal colleague commenting on the same photo said it’s standard procedure for the legal fraternity to bow in the presence of a higher authority and there’s nothing untoward about Dorcas Oduor kneeling before the appointing officer.
“You people do it in court everyday and it’s not interpreted as an act of worship, veneration or fear, why criminalize this case?”, a lawyer friend asked.
The reaction by Justin Muturi is further testament to the irreconcilable breakdown of his relationship with president Ruto.
Muturi now among the flag-bearers in the opposition together with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua have embarked on a smear campaign of the Ruto regime claiming that the Cabinet is held hostage by a few confidantes of the president including his Personal Aide Farouk Kibet.
In the meantime, Justin Muturi has emphasized that the only way to emancipate Kenya from totalitarian rule is to reject the culture of submission.
“We must reject this culture of submission. It breeds authoritarianism, not leadership,” the former Public Service CS concluded.
