Kenyans on social media have been left in shock following claims that veteran journalist and television host Jeff Koinange has been sacked from Royal Media Services (RMS), the parent company of Citizen TV.
The reports, which spread rapidly on X (formerly Twitter), Facebook and gossip blogs, alleged that Koinange had been shown the door due to a “drinking problem” that allegedly affected his on-air performance. Some online posts claimed that the award-winning anchor had appeared intoxicated during live bulletins and struggled to read from the teleprompter, forcing his co-anchor Olive Burrows to occasionally step in.
The Rumours Gain Momentum
The allegations first surfaced over the weekend on several online platforms, with unverified posts suggesting that RMS management had taken disciplinary action against Koinange. The posts, shared widely by entertainment bloggers and content creators, claimed the station had decided to “quietly let him go” to protect its brand image.
As expected, the claims spread like wildfire — fuelled by Koinange’s visible absence from Citizen TV’s prime-time news bulletins in recent days. Screenshots and edited clips of past broadcasts began circulating, with some users insisting they were “evidence” of the journalist being under the influence while on air.
His Co-Host Sets the Record Straight
However, amid the online frenzy, Koinange’s Hot 96 radio co-host, Fanya Mambo Kinuthia, has come out to dismiss the rumours as false and malicious.
In a social media post, Kinuthia clarified that Jeff had not been fired from RMS and was not intoxicated on set as alleged.
“Jeff Koinange was never fired. People need to stop spreading lies. We were on air together just the other day,” Kinuthia wrote, urging Kenyans to avoid falling for sensational gossip.
Despite this clarification, speculation has continued to swirl online, with many questioning why the celebrated anchor has been missing from Citizen TV’s signature programme, JKL Live.
Silence from Royal Media Services
Citizen TV and RMS have not issued any official statement regarding Koinange’s employment status, further fuelling curiosity.
Ordinarily, the departure of a senior journalist of Koinange’s stature would be accompanied by a formal announcement, as was the case when other prominent media personalities exited the station in the past.
The lack of confirmation — or denial — from management has therefore left room for speculation, even as colleagues and close associates insist that the journalist remains part of the RMS family.
The Man and the Brand
Jeff Koinange is one of Kenya’s most recognizable media figures, with a broadcasting career spanning more than two decades. From his days at CNN and K24 to his high-energy talk show Jeff Koinange Live on Citizen TV, he has built a brand synonymous with confidence, flamboyance, and storytelling flair.
His deep baritone, signature catchphrase “Oh my!”, and commanding presence have made him a household name across the region. Any suggestion of his departure from Citizen TV, therefore, naturally evokes strong emotions among fans.
The Danger of Social Media Gossip
The episode once again highlights the speed and reach of misinformation on Kenyan social media. In an age where gossip blogs compete for clicks, even unverified rumours can trend within hours and tarnish reputations.
Media analysts warn that such speculation can cause personal and professional harm, especially to public figures who rely on credibility and public trust.
“Before sharing such claims, people should ask themselves whether the source is credible. Careers have been destroyed by baseless gossip,” said one senior media observer who requested anonymity.
What We Know So Far
There is no official statement from Royal Media Services confirming that Jeff Koinange has been sacked.
His radio co-host has publicly denied the rumours, insisting Jeff remains employed at Hot 96.
Koinange has been absent from television for several days, but the reason for that absence remains unclear.
The viral allegations linking his absence to alcohol use remain unsubstantiated.
As of Sunday, Jeff Koinange’s voice could still be heard on Hot 96 FM, where he continues to host the morning show alongside Fanya Mambo. That fact alone appears to contradict the claim that RMS had terminated his contract.
Whether his break from Citizen TV is temporary or tied to internal restructuring is yet to be confirmed.
Until Citizen TV or Jeff Koinange himself issues an official statement, claims of his sacking remain unverified. What’s clear, however, is that the veteran broadcaster continues to command public attention — proof that even in his absence, the name Jeff Koinange still makes headlines.
As one social media user aptly put it:
“If Jeff has really left Citizen TV, they’ll need a whole newsroom to fill his shoes.”
