In a landmark move that could redefine Kenya’s environmental future, HACO Industries, the Murang’a County Government and Progreen Innovations have signed a high-impact partnership to champion circular waste management and curb the country’s mounting plastic pollution crisis.
The agreement—formalized in Murang’a and captured in a powerful moment featuring Progreen CEO Eng. James Muritu, Murang’a Deputy Governor Stephen Munania and HACO Industries Manufacturing Director Peter Ndichu—marks one of the most ambitious public-private sustainability alliances the region has seen in recent years.
The three partners are set to co-design a county-wide plastic take-back and recycling program that will transform how households, businesses and institutions handle post-consumer waste.
Key features of the initiative include:
Community collection points and branded waste bins across Murang’a
Education and behaviour-change campaigns targeting schools, markets and estates
EPR-aligned waste recovery systems that hold manufacturers accountable from production to disposal
Pilot recycling models that could be rolled out nationwide
Impact tracking covering plastic diversion volumes, community participation and emission reductions
This comprehensive approach is poised to boost local employment, clean up neighbourhoods and champion a thriving circular economy.
Murang’a Deputy Governor Stephen Munania lauded the partnership as a major stride in environmental stewardship and inclusive development.
“This initiative showcases how government and industry can work together to create jobs, promote cleaner communities and protect our environment for generations to come.”
HACO Industries Manufacturing Director, Peter Ndichu, affirmed the company’s pledge to responsible production beyond factory floors.
> “Sustainability is not just about how we manufacture—it’s about taking ownership of what happens after our products are used. With this partnership, we are closing the loop and turning waste into value.”
Progreen Innovations CEO Eng. James Muritu highlighted the firm’s technical expertise as a catalyst for real, measurable impact.
> “Our ecofuel processing, recycling logistics and infrastructure strengths will ensure the success of this project, while generating data that can guide future expansions across Kenya.”
With Murang’a serving as the test bed, the partners expect this pilot to shape a scalable model for other counties. The project aligns with Kenya’s Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) framework and the national drive to reduce pollution, enhance circularity and build a resilient green economy.
More than a recycling project, this partnership represents a new era where government and private innovators co-create solutions that protect both people and the planet.
As climate concerns heighten globally, Kenya continues to position itself as a regional leader in circular economy practices. The HACO–Murang’a–Progreen alliance sends a powerful message: lasting environmental change requires collaboration, innovation and community ownership.
And with Murang’a now on the front line of this revolution, the rest of Kenya is watching—ready to follow suit.
