The Odinga family has once again been thrown into mourning following the sudden death of Beryl Achieng Odinga, the younger sister of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. Her passing comes barely a month after the country laid to rest Raila, deepening the grief for one of Kenya’s most prominent political families.
The heartbreaking news was confirmed on Tuesday, November 25, by Raila’s elder sister and Kisumu Woman Representative, Ruth Odinga, who described Beryl’s death as “sudden” while withholding details of the cause.
Beryl Achieng, a daughter of Kenya’s independence icon Jaramogi Oginga Odinga and his first wife Mary Auma, was a sister to Raila Odinga and East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) MP Dr Oburu Oginga.
In her emotional announcement, Ruth painted a picture of a cherished sister, mother, and confidant whose loss has ripped through the family just as they were beginning to heal from Raila’s burial.
“It is with a heavy heart, but accepting the will of God, that we announce the sudden passing of Beryl Achieng Odinga. Daughter of the late Jaramogi Odinga and Mama Mary Ajuma Oginga. Mother to Ami Auma, Chizi, and Taurus,” Ruth said.
She added that although the pain of losing Beryl is immense, the family draws strength from the time they shared with her and the belief that she rests in God’s embrace.
“While we are deeply saddened by her demise and the immense void left in our lives, we take solace in the belief that she is safe in the Lord’s arms and are thankful for the invaluable gift of the time we were privileged to share.”
Beryl’s death marks yet another devastating chapter for the Odinga family, still reeling from the nation-shaking loss of Raila Odinga, who passed away just weeks earlier. Her demise has sparked an outpouring of condolences from leaders and Kenyans, many expressing shock at the rapid succession of family tragedies.
Preparations for burial and official condolences are expected in the coming days as the country turns its attention to the grieving Odinga lineage—long considered one of Kenya’s most influential political dynasties.
This is a developing story………
