The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has intensified its crackdown on hate speech and incitement ahead of the 2027 General Election, arresting a prominent Bunge la Mwananchi speaker in Nakuru over inflammatory and dangerous remarks captured in a viral video.

The suspect, 52-year-old Andrew Muriithi, was apprehended in the Shabab area of Nakuru West after detectives tracked him down following widespread circulation of footage showing him allegedly inciting violence and urging resistance against authority.

According to a statement released by the DCI on Saturday, Muriithi—who identifies himself as a traditional healer and grassroots public forum speaker—made pronouncements deemed highly inflammatory, including calls for unlawful assembly and threats of armed confrontation.

The DCI noted that the suspect’s remarks raised alarm within law enforcement circles due to their potential to inflame tensions in a country with a sensitive history of election-related violence.

“These statements attracted the attention of law enforcement agencies due to their inflammatory nature, raising significant concerns about public safety,” the DCI said. “The suspect remains in custody as investigations continue.”

Detectives from Nakuru West moved swiftly once the video gained traction online, underscoring the agency’s zero-tolerance stance on incitement and threats to national cohesion.

The arrest comes amid growing concern over rising political temperatures as Kenya inches closer to the 2027 General Election. Authorities have repeatedly warned individuals and groups against engaging in hate speech, disinformation, and rhetoric that could destabilize peace.

The DCI has reiterated its commitment to safeguarding national security, warning that anyone found spreading inflammatory or divisive content—particularly through digital platforms—will face the full force of the law.

Bunge la Mwananchi, known for its open-air, citizen-driven debates, has historically served as a platform for public discourse. However, the latest incident places renewed scrutiny on the movement, with authorities signaling closer monitoring of such gatherings to prevent misuse.

As investigations into Muriithi’s case continue, the arrest sends a clear message: Kenya’s security agencies are on high alert—and any attempt to incite violence ahead of the polls will not go unchecked.
