Thousands of homes and businesses across Kenya were plunged into darkness on Wednesday night after Kenya Power confirmed a widespread electricity outage affecting several key regions of the country.
In a customer advisory issued shortly after 9:00 p.m., the utility company said the blackout impacted customers in Nairobi, the Coast region, Mt. Kenya, and parts of the Central Rift, while electricity supply remained stable in sections of the North Rift and Western Kenya.
Kenya Power said its technical teams had been dispatched immediately to investigate the cause of the disruption and restore normal power supply as quickly as possible.
“We wish to inform our esteemed customers that we are experiencing a widespread power outage affecting customers in Nairobi, Coast, Mt. Kenya and parts of Central Rift. However, parts of North Rift and Western regions are on supply,” the company said in its statement.
The outage disrupted normal evening activities, leaving households, businesses, shopping centres, and transport hubs without electricity. Reports from several affected areas indicated that the blackout also interrupted operations at railway stations and other public facilities, with many Kenyans taking to social media to share their experiences.
Although Kenya Power did not immediately disclose the exact cause of the outage, multiple reports indicated the interruption was linked to a system disturbance affecting bulk electricity supply. Engineers were deployed across the network to isolate the fault and progressively restore power.
The incident marks one of the most extensive power disruptions experienced in Kenya this year, reigniting concerns over the resilience of the national electricity grid and the economic impact of large-scale blackouts on businesses and critical services.
Consumers have been urged to remain patient as restoration efforts continue and to report any localized faults that may persist after electricity is restored.
Kenya Power has assured customers that further updates will be issued as restoration progresses and investigations into the cause of the outage continue.
