President Ruto Storms Orengo’s Siaya Backyard this Sunday

President Ruto Storms Orengo’s Siaya Backyard this Sunday

President William Ruto is charging straight into Governor James Orengo’s political fortress this Sunday, March 8, in a high-voltage visit that has Siaya buzzing and Kenya’s opposition watching closely.

The Head of State will wear two hats in one day: chief guest at the grand launch of the Siaya Community Digital Hub in Bondo and headline act at Principal Secretary for Medical Services Dr. Ouma Oluga’s star-studded thanksgiving and homecoming ceremony at Okela Primary School, Uyoma Village, Rarieda Sub-County.

According to the Konza Technopolis Development Authority, the Bondo event doubles as the Digital Skilling & Jobs Summit 2026 – a youth-focused powerhouse designed to unlock tech jobs, creative economy opportunities and digital superhighway access across Siaya. “Jo Siaya, wabiro!” the authority declared, confirming President Ruto as chief guest.

Hours later – or possibly on the same whirlwind itinerary – Ruto will grace Dr. Oluga’s homecoming, an event locals are already calling #OlugaThanksGiving. The PS, a son of the soil, has mobilised nearly 500 pastors across Rarieda for a day of prayer and gratitude on Saturday, March 7, ahead of the big Sunday celebration.

Siaya is no ordinary stop. It is the undisputed backyard of Governor James Orengo, one of President Ruto’s most consistent critics. Just days ago Orengo accused the President of hijacking ODM and likened his style to Africa’s early dictators. Yet here comes Ruto – uninvited into the lion’s den – waving the flag of development.

This isn’t Ruto’s first flirtation with Siaya. He has hosted Siaya MCAs in Eldoret, received Orengo at State House, and pushed digital and health projects in the county. But Sunday’s double-header feels different: a direct, high-profile pitch to voters in Raila Odinga’s former stronghold at a time when ODM-UDA cooperation formally ends on March 7.

Insiders say the visit is pure Bottom-Up economics in action. The new Siaya Community Digital Hub – one of over 500 being rolled out nationwide – will deliver digital skilling, BPO jobs and government services at ward level. Dr. Oluga’s thanksgiving, meanwhile, spotlights health sector gains under his watch.

For Siaya youth, it’s jobs. For the county, it’s infrastructure. For Ruto, it’s proof that development trumps division.

Residents are already mobilising. Pastors in Rarieda have vowed “love for God, love for one another, and love for development.” Bondo is preparing a hero’s welcome for both the President and its own son, PS Oluga.

With barely 18 months to the next General Election, Ruto’s Sunday incursion into Orengo territory is being read as a calculated message: no county is off-limits. Whether Orengo attends, boycotts or fires fresh salvos remains to be seen – but the optics are unmistakable.

One thing is certain: when President Ruto touches down in Siaya this Sunday, the entire nation will be watching. Development or politics? In Kenya, it’s always both.
