Kisumu City Court Opens Doors, Promising Faster, Fairer Justice

Kisumu, Kenya — Kisumu on Monday marked a major milestone in its quest to expand access to justice after the official opening of the Kisumu City Law Courts, a move expected to streamline tribunal operations and ease the burden on litigants.

The ceremony was presided over by City Manager Abala Wanga and Kisumu Law Courts Chief Magistrate Hon. Dickson Onyango, who jointly unveiled the new facility. They were joined by the newly appointed City Court Magistrate Hon. Valery Adhiambo and Kisumu Courts Administrator Noel Otieno, signaling the Judiciary’s intent to hit the ground running.

“The City Court is not just another building — it’s a commitment to justice for the people of Kisumu,” said Onyango, noting that hearings will commence immediately.

The new court consolidates multiple tribunals under one roof, including the Rent Restriction Tribunal and the Business Premises Rent Tribunal, among others. Officials said this bold step will cut red tape, speed up case handling, and eliminate the confusion residents have faced when shuttling between different offices scattered across the city.

City Manager Wanga described the launch as a “historic stride” in Kisumu’s judicial reforms, praising the Judiciary’s decision to bring services closer to the people. He said the court will provide residents, especially small traders and tenants, with faster avenues for dispute resolution.

For years, litigants in Kisumu have complained about delays and costly processes in seeking justice, particularly in tenancy and commercial disputes. The establishment of the City Court is now expected to relieve pressure on the main Kisumu Law Courts, while allowing tribunal cases to be handled with greater efficiency.

Court officials confirmed that sittings will begin immediately, with priority given to backlogged cases.

With the launch, Kisumu joins other leading counties in embedding specialized courts within urban centers — a move in line with the Judiciary’s broader reforms to decongest courts and enhance public trust in the justice system.
