Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino has pledged his unwavering commitment to safeguarding the legacy of the late opposition leader Raila Amollo Odinga, vowing that he will not allow history to be rewritten or distorted.
Speaking passionately on Thursday, October 16, during a public gathering shortly after Raila’s body arrived back in the country, Babu lauded the fallen statesman as the cornerstone of Kenya’s democracy and a symbol of resilience in the nation’s long struggle for freedom and justice.
“I cannot and will never destroy Raila Odinga’s legacy. If anything, I will defend it with everything I have,” Babu declared to thunderous applause from supporters who had gathered to pay tribute.
Describing the late Raila as a father figure and mentor, the youthful legislator credited him for shaping Kenya’s political landscape over more than four decades. “Raila was a fearless champion for justice — a man who put the nation before self. His name is written in the very soul of Kenya,” he said.
Babu further urged Kenyans, especially the youth, to carry forward Raila’s vision of a fair, united, and prosperous nation. “We must carry the torch he lit. Raila believed in fairness, in democracy, and in a country where every child, regardless of their background, can dream and achieve,” he remarked.
The MP emphasized that honoring Raila’s memory should go beyond emotional tributes, calling instead for renewed political maturity and civic responsibility. “Raila’s struggles were never personal. They were for the collective good — for every Kenyan who believes in justice and equality,” he reminded the crowd.
As thousands of mourners continue to gather to bid farewell to the former Prime Minister, Babu’s words resonated deeply among those who credit Raila with shaping Kenya’s democratic path.
The government has already announced elaborate plans for a state funeral in honor of the ODM leader, with dignitaries from across Africa expected to attend the final ceremony.
