Kisumu’s war on waste just got turbocharged.
In a bold move to boost city sanitation, Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o has flagged off a powerful 15-tonne waste collection truck—four times the capacity of a standard garbage truck. Sleek, modern, and built for efficiency, the high-tech vehicle is being hailed as a game-changer in urban waste management.
“This isn’t just any truck,” Nyong’o declared. “It’s a 290-horsepower beast designed to clean up Kisumu faster, smarter, and cheaper.”
Equipped with an onboard compressor to suppress odours and prevent spills, plus a sealed safety cabin to reduce human exposure to waste, the truck is set to revolutionize how garbage is collected across the city.
But the truck is only one part of the puzzle. Kisumu County is rolling out a full environmental overhaul—with 14 waste separation centres already in place and new bins installed citywide.
Environment CEC Judith Oluoch revealed the truck will focus on transporting organic waste, which makes up 65% of Kisumu’s trash. “For this system to work, sorting must start at home. We’re urging every resident to separate their waste at the source,” she said.
Six recovery facilities have also been set up to handle plastics and recyclables, while partnerships with market traders and informal waste collectors are being tightened to support smooth rollout.
Governor Nyong’o made it clear: “This is a shared responsibility. The truck will do the heavy lifting—but keeping Kisumu clean starts with all of us.”
With the city’s green revolution now in high gear, Kisumu is charging ahead—one load of waste at a time.
