The Ministry of Health has rolled out a new WhatsApp chatbot, JALI, in a bold step to counter the spread of Ebola misinformation and enhance public access to verified health information.
Unveiled on June 6, the digital tool is designed to deliver fast, accurate, and reliable updates on Ebola virus disease directly to millions of Kenyans via WhatsApp—one of the country’s most widely used messaging platforms.
Fighting the ‘Infodemic’
As concerns over Ebola rise across the region, authorities are increasingly grappling not just with disease preparedness, but also with an “infodemic” of false and misleading information.
JALI aims to bridge this gap by offering trusted guidance on symptoms, transmission, prevention, and response measures, helping to dispel myths that often fuel panic and confusion.
Health officials say the chatbot will play a crucial role in restoring public confidence by ensuring that citizens receive information from a credible, centralized source.
The chatbot is designed for ease of use. Kenyans can access JALI by saving the number 0700 719 719, opening WhatsApp, and sending a message such as “Hello” to begin. By selecting prompts or typing keywords like “Ebola,” users receive tailored, up-to-date health information within seconds.
Unlike traditional call centers, JALI operates around the clock, offering uninterrupted access to critical health information. The system also helps ease the burden on healthcare workers by handling routine inquiries and directing users toward appropriate action when necessary.
The launch comes as Kenya strengthens its Ebola preparedness measures, including surveillance, border screening, and public awareness campaigns. While the country has not reported confirmed cases, officials stress that timely and accurate information remains a key line of defense.
JALI marks a significant move toward technology-driven public health solutions, leveraging mobile platforms to engage citizens in real time.
By meeting people where they already are—on their phones—the Ministry is redefining how health information is delivered, making it more accessible, responsive, and effective.
