The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has approved bribery charges against a senior magistrate and a senior probation officer following investigations by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).
In a press statement issued on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) announced that it had received an inquiry file from the EACC detailing bribery allegations against Hon. Martin Kinyua Mutegi, a Senior Principal Magistrate at Kangema Law Courts, and Julius Irungu Njogu, a Senior Probation Officer based at Kangema.
According to the DPP, an independent review of the evidence established that there is sufficient basis to prosecute the two officials.
The suspects will be charged with the offence of receiving a bribe, contrary to Section 6(1), as read together with Section 18(1) of the Anti-Bribery Act.
ADVERTThe DPP has directed that the two be arraigned immediately before a court of competent jurisdiction to answer to the charges.
The latest move marks another high-profile anti-corruption prosecution targeting officers within Kenya’s justice system, underscoring the government’s renewed push to tackle graft in public institutions.
In the statement, the ODPP reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the rule of law, protecting the public interest, and ensuring accountability through the prosecution of criminal conduct established during investigations.
The office also emphasized that all prosecutions are undertaken after an independent assessment of the available evidence, in line with its constitutional mandate.
If convicted, the accused could face penalties provided under the Anti-Bribery Act. However, as with all criminal proceedings, both suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
