Newly elected Ol Kalou Member of Parliament Sammy Douglas Waweru was officially sworn into the National Assembly on Tuesday, marking the beginning of his parliamentary tenure after a decisive by-election victory, in a ceremony punctuated by political excitement and a firm intervention from Speaker Moses Wetang’ula.
The swearing-in briefly descended into a charged political atmosphere when Members of Parliament affiliated with the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) erupted into cheers as Douglas entered the chamber accompanied by Kipipiri MP Wanjiku Muhia. Dressed in coordinated green attire, the legislators celebrated their colleague’s arrival before the oath-taking ceremony had begun.
Speaker Wetang’ula immediately restored order, reminding lawmakers that parliamentary tradition requires complete silence during the administration of the oath.
“Order, Honourable Members. You know that when you are swearing in your colleague, it is done in absolute silence. You can celebrate thereafter, and the celebration will be in the garden out there, not on the floor of the House,” the Speaker ruled.
ADVERTThe excitement did not end there. Wetang’ula also reprimanded DCP-affiliated Senators who had attended the ceremony after one was found occupying a seat reserved exclusively for Deputy President Kithure Kindiki in the Speaker’s Gallery.
The Speaker directed the Sergeant-at-Arms to immediately enforce House rules.
“Nobody, and I mean nobody, can take that seat except the Deputy President,” Wetang’ula declared.
After order was restored, Douglas took the Oath of Office, signed the official parliamentary register and was presented with key parliamentary documents, including a copy of the Constitution of Kenya.
Sharing his excitement after the ceremony, the new legislator pledged unwavering service to the people of Ol Kalou.
“Finally, I have taken the Oath of Office to serve the patriotic people of Ol Kalou Constituency. So help me God,” he said.
Humble Journey Captures Public Attention
Even before stepping into Parliament, Douglas had already won admiration from many Kenyans after choosing to travel to Nairobi aboard a public service matatu instead of using an official vehicle.
Images shared on social media showed the MP-elect travelling alongside ordinary passengers, a gesture that sparked widespread discussion and praise online as a symbol of humility and accessibility.
Landslide By-Election Victory
Douglas assumes office nearly two weeks after winning the July 16, 2026 Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election in commanding fashion.
He secured 35,440 votes, comfortably defeating United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate Samuel Muchina Nyagah, who garnered 5,450 votes.
His swearing-in officially restores full representation for Ol Kalou Constituency in the National Assembly, with residents now looking forward to the fulfilment of his campaign pledges on development, service delivery and effective representation.
As Parliament resumes its legislative agenda, Douglas joins the House at a politically significant moment, with heightened competition among parties expected to shape debates both inside and outside the chamber in the months ahead.
