Thousands of trained teachers have received a major boost after the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) announced one of the largest recruitment drives in its history, advertising more than 54,000 teaching and career advancement opportunities across the country.
The commission has invited applications for 20,000 permanent and pensionable Junior School teaching positions and 34,016 promotion vacancies for serving teachers and Curriculum Support Officers as the government steps up efforts to strengthen the Competency-Based Education (CBE) programme and bridge staffing gaps in public schools.
The recruitment is expected to significantly ease the teacher shortage that has dogged Junior Schools since the rollout of CBE, a challenge that has strained learning in many institutions due to rising enrolment and increased demand for specialized subject teachers.
Alongside the fresh recruitment, the promotion of more than 34,000 teachers marks one of the largest career progression exercises undertaken by TSC in recent years. The promotions span various teaching and administrative grades, offering long-awaited opportunities to educators who have remained in the same job groups for years despite meeting the required qualifications.

Education stakeholders have consistently urged the commission to accelerate promotions, arguing that delayed career progression has affected motivation and productivity among teachers.
Successful applicants for the Junior School vacancies will be employed on permanent and pensionable terms and deployed to schools across the country to support the growing learner population under the Competency-Based Education system.
The recruitment also underscores the government’s commitment to improving teacher-to-learner ratios and ensuring Junior Schools are adequately staffed as Kenya continues implementing education reforms.
TSC has urged qualified candidates to submit their applications through its official online recruitment portal before the stipulated deadline, while cautioning applicants against fraudsters who demand payment in exchange for employment. The commission has reiterated that all recruitment and promotion processes will be conducted transparently, competitively and strictly on merit.
