Kirinyagah Governor Ann Waiguru whose term constitutionally comes to an end in 2027 has hinted at running for an unspecified elective position.
Speaking on Thursday, July 31, Waiguru acknowledged calls from residents urging her to consider seeking a different leadership role in the upcoming elections.
She expressed confidence in earning the public’s support, adding that the people of Kirinyaga would decide which position she should go for.
“I know because of my performance in terms of development, you will support my bid for any political seat when the time for election comes. I ask you not to chase me away when I come asking for your support,” she said.
Waiguru also urged Kenyans to embrace political tolerance and restraint, noting that the country has made significant strides in democratic governance.
She cautioned against divisive politics, warning that incitement and suppression of opposing voices could destabilize the nation.
“Where we are heading, we are playing with fire. There are those trying to stop others from speaking just because they are in a different political camp. Let us be tolerant of diverse views because Kenyans are clever enough to decide who they will vote for,” she added.
Waiguru’s political career dates back to 2013 when she was appointed by President Uhuru Kenyatta as the first Cabinet Secretary for Devolution and Planning.
During her time in office, she established Huduma Centres across the country, which transformed government service delivery.
However, in late 2015, Waiguru resigned following the fallout from the National Youth Service corruption scandal involving the misappropriation of KES 791 million.
In 2017, she successfully transitioned to elective politics by running for the Kirinyaga County governorship on a Jubilee Party ticket.
Waiguru won the election, becoming the second Governor of Kirinyaga County and one of only three women to win governorships that year.
In the 2022 general elections, Waiguru won a second term, this time running under the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket.
