A renewed wave of hope swept through Nyalula Primary School in Central Alego Ward after the Walter Okelo Mentorship Program (WOMP) delivered a significant consignment of textbooks, marking a bold step in tackling the chronic shortage of learning materials in rural Siaya.

The initiative, led by Siaya senatorial aspirant and WOMP patron Walter Okelo, is part of a wider countywide campaign that will see over 4,000 textbooks distributed to learners in underserved schools.

Addressing students, teachers, and parents during the handover ceremony, Okelo underscored the program’s mission to level the academic playing field for rural learners.

“Many of us in rural schools grew up experiencing the harsh reality of textbook shortages. No child should have to share knowledge because of lack of access to adequate textbooks,” he said. “Through partnerships with donors and well-wishers, we have mobilized 4,000 textbooks to support learners across Siaya and strengthen education outcomes.”

School leadership welcomed the intervention, terming it timely and impactful. Nyalula Primary School head teacher, noted that while government efforts to supply textbooks are commendable, the demand consistently outpaces availability.

“We appreciate the government’s support, but the reality on the ground is that books are never sufficient,” he said. “This donation is not just valuable—it is transformative for our learners.”

Emotional scenes unfolded as parents and pupils expressed gratitude, citing long-standing struggles with inadequate learning resources that have hindered performance and participation in class.

Education experts have repeatedly flagged textbook shortages as a major barrier to quality education in rural Kenya, often forcing multiple learners to rely on a single copy. Interventions like WOMP are increasingly playing a critical complementary role in bridging this gap.

With the distribution set to expand to more schools in the coming weeks, the Walter Okelo Mentorship Program is steadily carving out its place as a catalyst for educational equity in Siaya—turning pages into possibilities, and books into brighter futures.
