Water supply to thousands of households across Siaya County is set to resume after a swift joint intervention by Kenya Power (KPLC) and the Sibo Water and Sanitation Company (SIBOWASCO) to fix a critical power failure at the Yala Water Treatment Works.
The outage, which disrupted water services in Siaya, Bondo, Yala Town, and surrounding areas, was traced to an electrical fault at the plant’s pump house that forced a shutdown of operations. The failure threatened water access for over 300,000 residents, as well as essential institutions such as hospitals and schools.
In a coordinated response, KPLC dispatched a specialized technical team to work alongside SIBOWASCO engineers, signaling a strong inter-agency collaboration aimed at fast-tracking repairs and restoring normal operations.
“SIBOWASCO team, together with KPLC specialists, are working diligently to resolve the power supply challenge affecting water production at Yala Water Treatment Works,” the utility said in an update.
The fault—linked to damaged cable insulation on a transformer feeder—posed significant safety risks, prompting engineers to halt power restoration until repairs and system tests are safely completed.
Officials emphasized that the ongoing remedial works are designed not only to restore supply but also to deliver a more stable and lasting solution to a problem that has recurred in the past.

Water supply is expected to resume progressively once stable electricity is restored, with residents urged to remain patient as crews finalize repairs.
The joint operation highlights the critical role of inter-agency cooperation in safeguarding essential services, as both Kenya Power and SIBOWASCO move to ensure a reliable water supply for the region.
SIBOWASCO has apologized for the inconvenience and assured customers of continuous updates as efforts to fully restore services enter the final stages.
